The modeling life

The modeling life

The good and the bad

Modeling seems easy right? You just gotta look good and pose in front of the camera and 1,2,3 you're a model. When your ready to wake up from your fantasy, I'll tell what the modeling world is really about. Modeling is not just about having a pretty face; you have to fit the part for a project just to get a gig. Modeling is a very competitive business, which is filled with rejection. I mean what did you expect? Did you think modeling was a simple business where you take pictures all day for a living. Here are some things you need to know about modeling that you will find very useful.

Take care

You've seen the models on TV and the magazine before right? Their skin is clear and free of bumps, boils and blackheads; their are in the best shape you thought possible. This is because its in their contract to look a certain; that's right, if they violate the contract in any way their agent can cut the contract and that will be the end of your career. So keep these key factors in mind:

A proper diet
Maintain good fitness
Skin care
Hair care
Great smile
These are what most agencies look at when drawing up a contract.

Education is key

You can learn a lot from reading articles on modeling; you could also research people who have or still is modeling. That way you can get a better understanding on how the business actually works. It would be best to read up on types of models, so you will know what kind you model you want to be; runway model to underwear model. You may also want to take some modeling classes to get a full understanding of this profession.
Build your portfolio

Your portfolio is a very vital accessory for you modeling career, so it should be handle as such. There are several ways to you can develop your portfolio; for example you can build your portfolio online at OneModelPlace.com, but it all comes down to how you go about developing yours. Before you even start to take photos for your portfolio, ask yourself what kind of model you plan to be. I stress this enough that you need to be completely honest with yourself; this will save you a ton of money and time.

Say cheese!

Now its time to take a few snapshots for your portfolio. That don't mean you use a camera phone to take you picture ( you know the one that you take in the bathroom mirror), but you can get a professional to take your pictures. You'll need a close up head shot, some profile shots ( side shots), and full length front and back shots from head to toe. After you have taking your photos have someone measure your height, chest, waist, and hips. Variety is key in a photo shoot so before the shoot make sure you have different attire; for example, swim wear, casual, business casual or formal. If you do decide to get a professional to take your picture (highly recommended) ask the photographer for some advice (they are professionals after all) they've been in the business for a while so they could lend you some great advice (especially for your portfolio). I know hiring a professional can be expensive, but it will pay off in the end, so just see it as a sound investment.

The Agency

Now its time to pay a visit to a modeling agency. Modeling agencies are always looking for new talent. Try doing a search for the nearest modeling agency near you. Major cities have plenty of agencies where they have open calls, so be ready with a well part together portfolio to present to an agency. They may have you walk or pose for them, so I hope you took my advice about the modeling classes (unless your a natural). If you get rejected, don't get let this bring you down; the simple reason behind this could be that your not what they are looking for right now, so just try another agency.

Congratulations!

OK, you got your first gig, now what? If you starting here are a few tips that will make your modeling career run smoothly:

Be polite- If you rub the people in this profession the wrong, it could cause your career end just as fast as you started
Develop a relationship with your photographer- If you go out your way to go that extra mile for you photographer, in return they will go that extra mile for you.
Be on time- To put it simple time is money and no one likes to waste time or money.
Above all you have to be on top of things; modeling can be a very busy profession and will require you to make moves just like that, so you can be behind on the little stuff.
